The GQ Men of the Year Awards, like the title suggests, is a ceremony that celebrates the achievements and deeds of male celebrities. Due to the gender that the ceremony is targeted at, an array of men attend, BUT it was the women who stole the limelight when it came down to the red carpet. Read on for the most epic looks of the night.
First off, let’s pause and give Rita Ora a round of applause. She’s not usually a highlight on the red carpet, and if she’s getting attention, it’s usually for the wrong reasons. But she was easily the best dressed at the GQ awards on the 2nd September at the Royal Opera House. Wearing a beautiful Zuhair Murad Couture gown from his AW 14/15 collection, she looked stunning. The silver, one shouldered gown with its high leg slit and beaded embellishments worked beautifully with Ora’s glowing skin. A dramatic smoky eye, nude lips and nude heels were the perfect match. All elements were on point, but if I could change one thing, I’d swap the cornrows for a sleek up do but keeping the quirky quiff.
Moving onto the rest of the ladies who got it right. Jourdan Dunn also wore a Zuhair Murad piece from the same collection. Dunn epitomises sexy sophistication. The jet black hue, the full sleeves and the length of the gown equates to elegance, whilst the cut out detailing skimming her hips, legs and body gives it a suggestive edge.
Nicole Scherzinger and Ellie Goulding opted for gowns from the same designer too – Ermanno Scervino was the designer of choice. Nicole kept it simple with a strapless gown from Scervino’s SS15 collection. With minimal make up, hair styling and jewellery, Scherzinger let the dress do the talking. Goulding went for a brilliant white gown with a high neckline and intricate lace detailing from Scervino’s SS14 collection. I just wish her hair was swept up so we could appreciate the elaborate lace that was partially hidden behind her long locks.
Whilst the women above were spot on with their choices, some ladies almost got it right. Unfortunately, Kim Kardashian West was one of them. We all get that Kim has a gorgeous body – I lust over her full hips! Because of her curves, she can pretty much make anything look sexy. That being said, there’s no need for her to overtly flaunt her body through her choice of clothing because her body stands out on its own accord. The custom made Ralph & Russo Couture crystal dress could have worked if it wasn’t teamed with an Atsuko Kudo bodysuit. Apart from the obvious fact that A LOT of her body was on show, the black bodysuit didn’t blend well with the silver skirt. A softer colour, more coverage and less shine from the latex bodysuit (yes Kim wore latex to an awards show) would have worked better. I’m liking it and disliking it at the same time.
However, Cara Delevingne is proof that even the slimmer girls don’t always pull off the ‘lots of skin on show’ look. Donning a sheer Burberry Prorsum dress with nothing underneath but high waisted knickers, she doesn’t look as good as she could do. More coverage underneath the dress, better shoes and toned down make up would have improved the look. However, her velvet coat was gorgeous!
Daisy Lowe stood out as the only woman in attendance who dared to ditch the gown and initially I thought good for her! She looked stylish in an understated way. Then I saw more pictures of her from different angles and noticed that there was just too much boob. Leave the side boob trend alone please ladies! The Barbara Casasola jumpsuit would have worked better with a simple V plunge.
Who do you think wore Zuhair Murad best? Rita Ora or Jourdan Dunn? Nicole Scherzinger or Ellie Goulding for Ermanno Scervino? Do you think someone else deserves a place on the epic list?
